Prelli to Present Certificate to Governor’s Horse Guard

By CT Department of Agriculture (7/12/10)

  JULY 13, 2010 --

On July 15, 2010, F. Philip Prelli, Commissioner of Agriculture, will present a Certificate of Appreciation to the Second Company Governor's Horse Guard located at 4 Wildlife Drive in Newtown.

The certificate is being given to recognize their assistance in the prevention of cruelty to animals in the State of Connecticut.

In January 2010, the Horse Guard agreed to assist the Department of Agriculture by housing abused and neglected horses and mules that were seized pursuant to a warrant. During the months of January through April 2010 the troopers and agricultural workers at the Horse Guard facility took care of the routine feeding, grooming and maintenance of two mules and two horses that had been suffering from neglect.

The Second Company Governor's Horse Guard was chartered in 1808 "to attend and escort the Governor in times of peace and war." The Second Company Governor's Horse Guard continues to serve Connecticut willingly today as it did during Colonial times. The Second Company Governor's Horse Guard is part of the organized militia of the State of Connecticut, under the direction of the Governor and the National Guard. Although today's troopers most often ride in ceremonial functions, cavalry military training of horse and rider take place throughout the year.
