| JULY 21, 2010 -- The blueberry season is in full swing and by the look of the weekend weather, it seems an ideal time to join in the picking. You don't want to miss out on this special summer fruit as it will be gone before you know it. Ron Olsen, Marketing Representative for the Connecticut Department of Agriculture says "the blueberry season is 2-3 weeks ahead of schedule and in some areas will be ending as early as next week as the summer heat has hastened the ripening process. The blueberry season usually lasts until the end of August with some of our late varieties, but the early varieties are reaching their peak right now". Blueberries are not only a healthy and nutritious fruit with just 80 calories per cup, they have virtually no fat, are a good source of fiber and contain almost 25% of the daily requirement of vitamin C. They are also a leading antioxidant. There are many pick your own farms throughout the state and many farm stands that sell CT Grown blueberries. The Department of Agriculture's popular "Pick Your Own Fruits and Vegetables" brochure was updated, printed, and sent to town halls and public libraries across the state this month. It is available on the Department's website, www.CTGrown.gov (click on "Publications" at left of page), where consumers also can find listings for farm stands and stores, farmers' markets, and many other agricultural destinations.
