Membership: What's In It For Me?

Have you ever been talking with some about the Grange and heard them ask, "What's in it for me?" Maybe you've even thought this yourself. There are many people out there that are only interested in joining the Grange if they know they're going to get something out of it.

Grange Growth Update

It's a funny thing about going to Grange meetings: you go through the meeting, have a social hour afterwards and then leave for home. Over the years, or so, you tend to get into this routine. It's inevitable.

Does your Grange need help??

Congratulations to the members of Wolcott Grange who recognized that the had a problem and asked the members of the State Grange Revitalization Committee to come and help them. There are many Granges in the State who have similar problems and are not able to admit it.

Information on the 2010 NE Leaders' Conference

The 2010 Northeast Leaders' Conference will be held at the Ramada Hotel and Conference Center at 1380 Putney Road in Brattleboro, Vermont on January 8, 9 and 10, 2010. Hotel reservations must be made with the hotel at (802) 254-8701 no later than JANUARY 1, 2010; be sure to mention Vermont State Grange when reserving.

Grange Growth Summit Pt. 2

We are pleased to submit this report on the Grange Growth Summit which was held in Wytheville, VA, September 11 - 13. This is a beautiful part of the country and we enjoyed perfect weather and great accommodations. The Summit was well attended by 35 Grange members, representing 9 states, including State Masters of DE, PA, NJ, TN, VA and WVA.

First Impressions

Communication key in “new” Grange

National Grange introduced last year several innovations to inform membership of activities and/or report out on important issues. The first is YouTube. The National Grange has set up a site on YouTube with a number of video pieces.

Leadership for the future of the Grange

Recently Hemlock Grange hosted a membership seminar with Rusty Hunt the National Membership Director co-coordinating the activities.  One of the last questions that Rusty asked the Grangers who had assembled for the meeting was, ‘Who does your Grange belong to?’

Revitalization off to a good start in Connecticut

By the time you are reading this, most Granges have already conferred Degrees. How did your Grange do??? Report forms for membership increases will be sent to the Secretary of each Grange by our State Secretary when she returns your March Quarterly Report.

Think Big

Put together the same people, doing the same thing, and you will get the same thing over and over. If your Grange wants to attract new members, try thinking big. Thinking big means you plan on doing something that will not be easy. In other words, do something that will be difficult.

Look to the Future

Do you want to have the opportunity to recruit the most new members? If so, your focus must be to look into the future. History is great and it is positive to see what your Grange has done in the past and what impact it has had. However, that isn’t what gets most people to join today.

Create A Grange Newsletter / Hand Out

When was the last time someone gave you something to read because they thought you would like it? Does your Grange have a newsletter or a hand-out for your members? If not, it's time to have a team of your members put one together. Make sure that it is positive and tells what your Grange is planning as well as what you've done.

Build on the Good

Do your fellow Grange members have a negative attitude? If you want to get new members a crucial thing to work on is getting your current members to change to a positive attitude. The first step is to take the time to evaluate what your members enjoy about the Grange. Find the things that make them feel good.

Reaching out to potential members

“Summertime and the living is easy.” So goes the words of a song. We could substitute one about the Grange that says “Summertime and the Grange gets more relaxed.” This is when we have picnics often adding a “meeting” to cover any business. This could be a good time to invite people you fell might decide to become members.

February Membership Moment

Last month Higganum Grange held a pot luck supper. The theme was ‘to bring a dish with the dish’. (Or bring a friend with the menu offering. Thanks for the idea, Gail Hanson and Suzanne Giuca.) Then this month was writing down resolutions to improve the Grange. (Again thanks to Gail and Suzanne.)

Please keep in touch with us

On Saturday, November 24, the Membership Committee met. A year ago, we had offered to help any Grange that was having membership problems. No Grange asked for help. However, three Granges handed in their Charters.
