At our June meeting we had four proposals for membership. Two of the proposed members were in attendance and participated in our meeting. The other two are our new next-door neighbors and it is tradition to ask them to join our Grange. Needless to say, all were voted in and will be obligated in the near future.
Our Plant and Rummage Sale was a success financially as we made over $4400.00. We also educated customers about the Grange and about the history of our Grange Hall. We collected 58 G-Notes during the sale and voted to give them to the State Grange for their Convention. It was also decided that next year we will only be doing the Plant Sale.
Our Grange Farm School Committee had 13 participants at their Cultivating Questions presentation with Lynn Cline providing refreshments using local ingredients. The discussion part of the meeting included cultivating health in the soil, in food and in the community. Master Chris Hopkins welcomed all and spoke on Hope the 2nd degree “a liberal harvest”. Presentations were given on biodynamic preps, flail mower tilling, composting, cover crops and more.
The Lecturer’s Program at our June meeting had Carl Chaiet as our speaker. He and his wife Lynn Kearcher, who is a member of our Grange, wrote and illustrated a book that came out in hard cover in August 2007 called Man’s First Word. He explained how it came about to write and illustrate. The illustrations were drawn in ink, and he had many examples of the cover and pages. Everyone was given a beautiful illustration of their work. Patrick O’Brien, State Deputy, Vice President of Mountain Laurel Pomona and President of Winchester Grange gave Greetings from our State President Robert Buck and thanked everyone for an enjoyable evening. He invited all to the Winchester Grange Dance on July 11th from 6 PM to 9 PM.
