From The Historian's Desk
From the Pages of the Connecticut Granger

By Edith Schoell, State Historian

  DECEMBER 2009 --

Several years ago the CWA conducted a nationwide sewing contest. Several? Well, a good many years ago, we did have a winner when Ruth Hickcox of Norfield Grange entered in Class C competition. Sister Hickcox made the winning entry for her five year old daughter, Hilary, who is shown wearing the dress in the photograph.

At that time Sister Hickcox was busy with three children, age 5, 7 and 8, and was involved in various church activities.

She won first place by combining two McCall's patterns. The dress was delicately smocked with long sleeves and matching slip-in pants trimmed with dress fabric.

Sister Hickcox is still active and reports to the Granger on Norfield Grange's activities.
