Lyme Grange remembers Gloria Maddocks

By Hartford Courant (2/15/11)

  FEBRUARY 16, 2011 --

Gloria M. Maddocks died on February 11, 2011, at Apple Health Care in Old Saybrook. Born on September 10, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Emil and Helen (Sankow) Ewankow.

Gloria worked for Lyme-Old Lyme High School as secretary to the principal for 42 years. She loved her job and was wholly devoted to the town's young people. She was a number one fan of the Wildcats and faithfully attended games and a wide array of other school events. She was especially fond of soccer and many former students recall her cheering from the sidelines in all types of weather. In 1997, as a tribute to all that she gave to LOLHS, the baseball field was dedicated in her name.

Gloria retired in November of 1996 to care for Chelsea Evankow, her beloved great-niece. When Chelsea went off to Kindergarten, Gloria became "Glo-Glo" to Stella and Henry Fisher of East Lyme. She adored all her children and spent later years reveling in the antics of these young kids.

All her life, Gloria was a devout Catholic. She was also a wonderful friend to many. She spent time every week visiting the elderly and sick at local nursing homes. Gloria loved beautiful things, especially those in nature. She adored flowers of all kinds and often watched the flocks of birds that came by the feeder in her backyard.

Gloria served as treasurer of the Hamburg Fair Association for 37 years and was a member of the Lyme Grange for 65 years.

She is survived by her son, Eric C. Maddocks and her brother Emil Ewankow. She was predeceased by her sister, Lucy Evankow, and her two brothers, Henry Ewankow and Sigmund Evankow.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday (February 16, 2011) at 10 a.m., at St. Joseph's Church in New London, CT. All are invited. Interment to follow in Eight Mile River Cemetery, Lyme.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Lyme Public Library, Gloria Maddocks Children's Book Fund, 482 Hamburg Rd., Lyme, CT 06371 . To sign the on line guest book visit www.fultontherouxoldlyme.com.
