Around The Grange
January 2014 News from Ekonk Community Grange

By Sue Gray

  JANUARY 5, 2014 --

At our Dec. meeting, we remembered our roots from 125 years ago, when our Grange organized and dues were $3.00 for men and $1.00 for women.  It was interesting to find, through research that we have THREE generations having held the position of Master/President:  John Molodich Jr.; his son, Michael Molodich and Michael’s daughter, Katie Molodich!  Mike and Katie both hold office today, while John Jr. is watching from The Great Grange Above.  We voted to hold our 125th anniversary in April – date to be announced

Our youth are enjoying Sunday night Volleyball in the Sterling Gym and will soon travel to MA for a snowboarding adventure!

Our pavilion looks FANTASTIC- thanks Chris Sebastian and volunteers:  this will be enjoyed by many in the days and years ahead!

We were saddened to accept (with regrets) the resignation of our A.S., J. Allen Cameron, who has been accepted into the prestigious Miner Institute in Chazy, NY to study agriculture.  He is the second student from UConn accepted into this program, the first was Ekonk’s own Jon Hermonot!  Congratulations, J. Allen!  We voted to assist Sterling Family Day with a  Spaghetti Supper at our hall on Jan. 18th.  We have established a “Commercial Refrigerator Fund.”  One of our standard refrigerators “died” and our present commercial is over 25 years old and was just restored to full usage.  We received a donation of $200.00 from Bill Sebastian and family and it was voted to put this into the Grange Scholarship Account.

Our Grange placed 4th nationally in the 2013 Community Service Contest and congratulate our Richmond, RI friends, who captured first place.  Their 50 mile MS walk was truly an amazing project to undertake and complete!

Eleven from Ekonk attended parts of the National Grange Convention.  Jody and Jodi Ann as delegates; Jamie Cameron was a marching candidate for the Seventh Degree; Clifford and Trevor Gervais were members of the Sixth Degree Rose Drill Team and Clifford was on the National Grange Youth Officer Corp.  Link Cooper and Paulette Craig, and the three Gervais brothers all took the Seventh Degree.  Katie and Mike Molodich represented Ekonk at the National Grange Distinguished Grange Awards Reception, when Ekonk received the plaque for this distinction.l  Jody Cameron brought (from National Grange), “Hank the Burro” to visit Ekonk.  “Hank” will be visiting Granges during the coming year.  Jody took a group picture at our Dec. meeting (with GK, Richard Tavalsky holding “Hank”).  Visit us anytime!
