National Grange Quilt Block Contest Rules

The National Grange Quilt Block Contest is a program promoted by the National Grange Lecturer to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the National Grange in 2016. The idea behind the contest is to create a vehicle for our members to share their creative talents.  SO LET'S START QUILTING! 

 

Theme:  Summer

Color Scheme:  Red, White and Blue

Pattern:  Northumberland Star

Completed Size:  12-1/2” x 12-1/2”

 

Cutting Instructions:

Fabric 1 – Background Fabric:

Cut 4 squares 3-1/2” x 3-1/2” (Piece 1A)

Cut 4 rectangles 2-5/8” x 4-3/4” (Piece 1C)

Cut 1 square 7-1/4” x 7-1/4”, cut twice diagonally to make 4 quarter-square triangles (Piece 1E)

Fabric 2 – Star Points:

Cut 4 squares 3” x 3”, cut once diagonally to make 8 half-square triangles (Piece 2B)

Cut 8 squares 2-5/8” x 2-5/8” (Piece 2D)

Fabric 3 – Center

Cut 1 square 4-3/4” x 4-3/4” (Piece 3F)

 

Piecing the Block:

Step 1 … Square and Triangles Unit

Sew Piece a 2A triangle to side of Piece 1A square.  Repeat to add second triangle to adjacent side of square.  Make 4 units.

Step 2 … Flying Geese Unit

Draw a diagonal line on wrong side of Piece 2D red squares.  Layer Piece 2D square and Piece 1C rectangle.  Sew directly on top of drawn line.  Cut away excess fabric 1/4” from seamline.  Press seam allowance.  Repeat for other end of rectangle.  Make 4 units.

Step 3 … Assembling Block

Sew each square and trangle unit from Step 1 to each flying geese unit from Step 2.  Sew the piece 1E triangles to either side of two of these units.  Sew remaining other two units to the Piece 3F square and complete to make block, as shown. 

Rules:

A. The period of the contest runs from January 1, 2015 until September 15, 2015 deadline for submissions is September 30, 2015 to the National Lecturer, James Tetreault, 10 Parker Street, Winchester, NH 03470.

B. Judging will be done prior to National Grange session.

C. Any entries received after the deadline will not be judged, however, they will be exhibited at the National Grange session in Lincoln, NE.

D. Pattern:  This year’s pattern will be the Northumberland Star.

E. Colors for this year will be red, white and blue.

 

Categories:

A. Individual quilt block to measure 12-1/2” x 12-1/2” and must come unfinished- no batting/backing.

B. Quilted throw pillow finished size 18” x 18” must come finished batted and backed.

C. Quilted table runners size 17” x 56” must come finished!

 

All categories must use the Northumberland Star.

All entries become the property of the National Grange.  All entries will be given proper credit and awards.

We ask that each entrant also submit the following information:  Name(s); Grange Name & Number, State; Address/Hometown; Years of Grange Membership; What is special about your Grange/hometown?
