President's Message
President's Message: Join us at Leaders Conference

By George Russell, CT State Grange President

  MARCH 3, 2019 --

As we begin the month of March, we have pretty much put the final touches on the Northeast Leaders Conference.  We have a great line-up of speakers for Friday evening and throughout the day on Saturday.  On Friday evening Ed Martins from Web Industries will discuss, “Can Your Culture Help You or Hurt You?”  Saturday speakers are Rick Hermonot from Farm Credit East.  His topic is “Are We Recruiting for Success or SUCCESS?”  Faith Quinlan, State Membership Director, will present a workshop on Membership.  Burton Eller, Legislative Affairs Director of the National Grange will be speaking about legislation and updating us on the 2018 Farm Bill.  To close out the day on Saturday evening we will have the Banquet and the presentation of Community Service Awards for firefighters, law enforcement officers and teachers.  Marge Bernhardt, State Lecturer, has scheduled entertainment by cabaret performer Ashley Cruz.  I am hoping for a good turnout from our Connecticut Grangers to meet Grangers from the Northeast for the three “F Words” – Fun, Food and Fellowship.

I have asked the three Pomonas to donate a basket full of items that can be raffled off at the Leaders Conference.  If any Grangers want to donate items for the raffle, please bring them to the conference when you come on Friday, March 29.  The money collected from this raffle will be donated to the Love for Lillian Fund.

Ag Day at the Capitol will be held on Wednesday, March 20, 2019 from 10:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. in the North Lobby and the Hall of Flags at the Capitol in Hartford.o  The snow date is March 21.  The Connecticut State Grange Agricultural Committee is working on updating the booth that will be set up at the capitol that day.  If you are in Hartford, stop in and see the Connecticut State Grange booth.

As I am writing this article, I am getting ready to attend the Master’s Conference in Wichita, Kansas from Feb. 14 to the 17th.  I will have more on the Master’s Conference in my April article.

I would like to end this article with another old saying, will: “March come in like a lion and go out like a lamb?”  Let’s hope we have an early spring!  I have had enough of winter.
