From The Lecturer's Desk
From the Lecturer’s Desk: Such A Busy Time of Year

By David Roberts, CT State Grange Lecturer

  OCTOBER 1, 2023 --

The Connecticut State Grange Lecturer’s Department received a grant from the National Grange Foundation to promote a Connecticut State Grange deaf awareness event at the American School for the Deaf in West Hartford.

We will help to present a Trunk or Treat on Mon., Oct. 30 (any Grange member can participate) at the American School for the Deaf in the front parking lot. Participants are asked to arrive between 5:00 and 5:30 PM to set up their “car trunk” for a 6:00 PM start time. It is anticipated that the event will last for about one hour and that 60 students from the American School for the Deaf, their parents and siblings, will participate. Please let event co-chair Dave Roberts know if you or your Grange would like to participate in Trunk or Treat.  It is permissible to distribute candy or other wrapped goodies at this event. A few children are not able to consume candy, so having a small amount of alternative items (pens, pencils, stickers, books, comics, etc. is advisable).

The following day (10/31) from 1:30 to 2:30 we will host a Costume Parade and Library Maze for the students and teachers. Grange themes and images will be worked into this fun event to help students in Pre-K through Grade 5 celebrate Halloween. The Grange will host a table of goodies (comic books, stickers, etc.) to hand out to the students in the maze. Volunteers are needed and many of the duties can be done sitting down. Please contact Dave Roberts to volunteer.

One positive outcome of this grant is that Mountain Laurel Pomona has added “Deaf Awareness Committee updates” back to the normal Pomona meeting agenda to hear any updates on this event or any other deaf awareness related events.

It is time to look forward to our State Convention in Norwich from Oct. 19 -21 and the State Grange Lecturer Awards.  Here is a summary of our two Awards Programs:

LECTURER’S APPRECIATION AWARD  (In  2021-2022,  seven Granges earned this award!) HONOR LECTURER AWARD (In 2021-2022, six Granges earned this award!)

If you think your Community or Pomona Grange qualifies for either recognition or need more information, please drop me an email or call me to let me know.

Many of you have heard that we have FOUND the Grange Plot in Peoples State Forest and (working with CT DEEP) are raising funds to place a bronze plaque on a boulder on The Grange Plot. We are close to raising 75% of the needed $2,000 for this project. Any donations are welcome and checks should be made out to: Connecticut State Grange, 100 Newfield Rd., P.O. Box 3, Winchester Center, CT 06094. All donors will be recognized at the dedication ceremony and you will be part of preserving this important history. See you in Norwich.
